Rockin' God Gloves

I made these for the Rock-Along and also because I've always wanted to get these two symbols tattooed on my hands. Tats are expensive and impractical, yarn is not.

DO NOT SKIP THESE INSTRUCTIONS! EVEN IF YOU ALWAYS SKIP INSTRUCTIONS LIKE ME, DO NOT SKIP THESE!

THIS PATTERN IS NOT FOR THE TIMID!! It requires knowledge of two color knitting, both intarsia and fair isle, as well as extensive DPN use. Not to mention intarsia in the round. Close your mouth. It's not easy, but it's possible.

NOTE FOR THE UNINFORMED: Those two symbols are Wiccan goddess and Horned God symbols. Putting these on your gloves is kinda like putting crosses on your gloves. If you're comfortable making that statement, go bananas. If not, don't. And if you want to complain that I'm a godless heathen that's going straight to hell, complaints can be lodged with the Registry for Complaints and Mandatory Horsewhippings.

Should you decide that you do not want any pagan symbols on your hands, but like the idea of intarsia symbols on the back of the hands, it is both possible & doable. Simply center the design over 24 stitches. ((24 stitches - # of stitches in chart) divided by 2). With the left hand, you start the chart at that number + 24 stitches from the start of the row, on the right, it's simply that number of stitches from the start of the row.

First, I have to give credit where credit is due. I based this pattern off of Elizabeth Dimbleby's pattern and Lucy Harvey's pattern. I've combined the two and added my own touches. I'm not copyrighting this, no money can be made from this (free) pattern and this is just so people can make their own pair! Please don't sue me, I'm broke anyway.

OK, intarsia in the round. Believe it or not, this is possible. No, I am not insane. Nor is this my first project with this technique. It CAN be done. It does take patience. For a paid tutorial check here, or in the Fall '03 Interweave Knits.

The specific charts for these patterns can allow the MC color to be carried behind the CC blocks. Just keep your strings long. Too long. Not excessively long, but long. Don't carry it tightly, gloves need to stretch, and carrying it too tightly causes intarsia to pop.

Here is the Christina technique for intarsia in the round, which I haven't been able to find anywhere. Maybe it's cheating, maybe it's not.
Round 1: Twist yarns, then knit according to chart.
Round 2: Knit main color stitches in main color to end of chart, slipping complimentary color stitches knitwise. Twist yarns. Turn work, slipping main color stitches purlwise and purling the unpurled stitches. Drop complimentary yarn, turn work, and slip worked stitches onto right hand needle. Continue in pattern.

Instructions will be given for the left (right) glove.

You'll Need:
100 yards DK weight yarn in main color (MC) (white - Lion Brand Something or another)
50 yards DK weight yarn in complimentary color (CC) (green - Patons Kroy in Jade)
Set of size 4 DPNs
Set of size 3 DPNs
2 stitch holders
2 stitch markers

Left (Right) Glove: Cast on 48sts onto size 3 needles in CC and join without twisting. Place marker at beginning of the round. Work K1P1 corrugated rib (K1 in MC, P1 in CC, keeping both yarns in the back of the work when inactive) until ribbing reaches 3", or desired length to top of wrist.

Goddess
Switch to size 4 needles. Knit 3 rounds in stockinette.

Knit 27 (8) stitches. Begin goddess (horned god) intarsia panel. Continue working intarsia panel and begin work on thumb gusset (instructions below).

Horned God

Thumb:
1st Round: Knit 22(24), increase right, increase left, knit 24(22) (50 stitches)
(Note: While I normally use make 1s as increases, I find the holes these creates as chilly on gloves. I tend to use slanted increases for these. A tutorial for increasing is here)
2nd (and all alt rounds): Knit around
3rd Round: Knit 22(24), incr right, knit 2, incr left, knit 24 (22) (52 stitches)
5th Round: Knit 22(24), incr right, knit 4, incr left, knit 24(22) (54 stitches)

Continue like this, increasing 2 sts every other round until 60 sts. Knit 1 round.

Next Round: Knit 34 (36), slip first 22 (24) and last 24 (22) sts onto st holders.
You should now have 14 stitches available on your needles. Share these out onto 3 needles, cast on 2 sts and join. Knit 4 rounds.

Knit 1 in MC, knit 1 in CC (purl the CC stitches if you want, but stockinette won't roll in this stitch) around for 3 rounds. Bind off in CC. Break both strands.

Palm:
Pick up and knit 2 sts from base of thumb, then 24 (22) from 2nd st holder, place marker for start of round (marker 1) knit 24 from 1st st holder and place marker (marker 2). Knit to marker 1. Knit 2 rounds.

If adding flip tops to the gloves, purl 24 (knit 24), knit 24 (purl 24). (Purls should be on the same side as the intarsia decorations- the back of the hand)

Knit 2 more rounds for a total of 5 rounds.

Pinkie:
FROM MARKER 2, knit 29, cast on 2 sts. Slip first and last 19 stitches onto stitch holder(s). (38 on holder, 12 active) Slip center 12 st for pinkie onto dpns and knit 4 rounds. Knit alternating MC and CC for 3 rounds, as before. Cast off in CC and break both strands.

Pick up and knit 2 sts from base of pinkie, knit 19 from 1st st holder, place marker, knit 19 from 2nd stitch holder. Knit to marker, knit 1 round (40 stitches).

Ring Finger:
Knit 27, cast on 2. Slip last and first 13 stitches onto stitch holders (26 on holders, 16 active). Slip center 16 stitches onto DPNs and knit 4 rounds. Knit alternating MC and CC for 3 rounds, as before. Cast off in CC and break both strands.

Pick up two stitches from base of finger, knit 13 stitches from holder, place marker, knit remaining stitches from holder. Knit to marker (28 stitches).

Middle Finger:
Knit 15, cast on 2. Slip first and last 7 sts onto stitch holder (14 on holder, 16 active). Slip center 16 stitches onto DPNs and knit 4 rounds. Knit alternating MC and CC for 3 rounds, as before. Cast off in CC and break both strands.

Pick up 2 stiches from base of finger, knit 7 stitches from holder, place marker, knit remaining stitches from holder. Knit to marker (16 sts).

Forefinger:
Knit 4 rounds. Knit alternating MC and CC for 3 rounds, same as thumb. Cast off in CC and break both strands.

Weave in ends. (Trust me. It's easier)

Flip Top:

(The top is worked as two separate pieces for 3 rows, then joined)

Using size 4 needles, pick up 24 stitches in MC from the purl bars running across the top of glove. Purl across stitches. Knit across. Purl across. (3 rows) Break yarn.

On separate needles, cast on 24 stitches in CC. Work corrugated rib for 3 rows. Break CC yarn. Using the MC yarn, join the two pieces and knit across. (50 stitches) The start of the row will be the end of the corrugated rib.

Work stockinette until mitten lid is between 2"-4". Adjust for length of fingers. Begin decreases:

Round 1: (Knit 2, knit 2 together) to the end of the row.
Round 2: Knit across
Round 3: (K1, K2 together) to the end of the row
Round 4: Knit across
Round 5: K2 together across
Round 6: Knit across
Round 7: K2 together across

Break yarn and thread through remaining stitches. Sew first three rows together and weave in remaining ends.

Eat some chocolate and be proud. Be very proud.
